(CNN) “My children are not broken, ” Amy Wright insists.
Most parents do not have to declare their children’s fundamental worth, but after two of 2017 CNN Hero of the Year Amy Wright’s kids were born along with Down syndrome, it was clear that will she would have to back them upward every step of the way.
“When you become a mother or father of a child with special requirements, you are instantly thrust into getting an advocate, ” Wright described. “Trying to make people see the elegance in their lives that we see. inch
Wright’s advocacy took the form of a coffee shop. The girl opened Bitty & Beau’s Espresso in January 2016, named on her two children.
On Sunday, it was clear that will Wright, Bitty, Beau and the forty disabled employees at the Wilmington, New york, shop have an army of followers.
Wright was named the 2017 CNN Hero of the Year for her attempts to advocate for disabled individuals. The award is determined by online voters who selected Wright from one of the top 10 CNN Heroes finalists.

will receive a 10 dollars, 000 cash award. Donations designed to each of their designated nonprofit agencies are also being matched up to fifty dollars, 000.

Sunday’s CNN Heroes tribute display was a night of shining stars, salutes and tears — and a few fun, too.
Hosting companies Kelly Ripa and Anderson Cooper kicked things off live through New York’s American Museum associated with Natural History with a unique performance of “Wind Beneath My Wings, ” complete with jazz hands simply by Kelly.
