Chicago ID program a ploy to target Latino voters, critic says

The Chicago plan to give government-issued id cards to anyone living in the town will make getting a fake ID easier, a city alderman said.

Are these claims going to be a way for people obtain fake identification? I think there’s a solid chance for that happening, said Chi town Alderman Nick Sposato.

Critics also believe the program is a ploy for Chi town Mayor Rahm Emanuel to pick up Latino votes as he potentially gears as much as run for mayor again.

I think it’s about votes. I mean, I think they’re simply trying to please a certain demographic within the city to say: Hey we’re for you personally, we support you and I think that’s exactly what it’s about, Sposato said.

Emanuel will be forging ahead with plans for that million-dollar program, despite the criticism.

“Chicago will not relinquish our status as a inviting city, Emanuel said at a current press conference.

The city says the free of charge IDs will help those who currently find it difficult to get one like the homeless, formerly incarcerated and undocumented immigrants live a much better life.

“You need an ID for a work. You need an ID to get a flat. You just need an ID for almost everything, said Gilbert Villegas, Chair associated with Chicago City Councils Latino Caucus.

Villegas says an applicant will not have to confirm U. S. residency. The citys website states that a person is going to be required to prove they live in Chi town but it does not mention U. Ersus. residency documentation.

A spokesperson for the Chi town City Clerk, Kate Lefurgy, informed Fox News all rules continue to be being drafted.

Sposato said the program can create an underground market to get ID scams.

“I’m worried about fraud right here and I’m worried who’s likely to get these. Who’s going to state who they are? Who’s going to vouch for to whom they say they are, Sposato said. Are able somebody walk in when we open which often door that day, can lady walk in and say I’m Bernado Smith and can they get an IDENTIFICATION saying they’re John Smith. type

Villegas acknowledged, as with any system, there might be a few bad actors.

“There are going to be penalties available for those that do commit fraud, your lover said.

The city is currently taking bids to settle on the software that will administer the IDs and is finalizing what types of documents heading accept and if an applicant will need professionals vouch for them.

Security and fraud insurance are our top priorities, LeFurgy wrote in an e-mail. Like the other useful offices across our state that administrate government IDs, we will have skilled professionals who will authenticate these writings.

Villegas says Chicago decided to take up the speed of the program after forthcoming Trump was elected.

“This ordinance had been being worked on but there was a feeling of expediency once the administration changed at national level, Villegas said.

Chicago’s IDENTIFICATION program was modeled in part later San Francisco’s, which has issued beyond what 20, 000 IDS. That locality has sworn it will protect foreigner information from the federal government.

Sposato believes one of the Chicago program will end up costing certainly three times more than the million-dollar budget.
