Disability emojis proposed by Apple

Apple would like to introduce new emojis to better signify people with disabilities.

Helpful tips dog, a wheelchair user plus prosthetic limbs are just some of the icons it’s suggested.

This said very few of the current emoji options “speak to the life encounters of those with disabilities”.

“Adding emoji emblematic to users’ life experiences helps foster the diverse culture that is inclusive of impairment, ” it added.

Apple’s submitted its proposal to the Unicode Consortium, the company which reviews requests for new emoji characters.

In its submitting Apple said: “Currently, emoji give a wide range of options, but may not stand for the experiences of those with afflictions.

“Diversifying the choices available helps fill a significant space and provides a more inclusive experience for those. ”

It’s produced 13 suggestions of emojis in order to introduce.

  • Helpful information dog
  • A man and woman strolling with a cane
  • A man and female signing that they are deaf
  • An hearing with a hearing aid
  • A man plus woman in both mechanical and guide wheelchairs
  • A service dog (a educated dog that helps those with hidden disabilities)
  • A prosthetic arm
  • The prosthetic leg

Apple said: “This is not meant to be a comprehensive list of every possible depictions of disabilities, yet to provide an initial starting point for better representation for diversity within the emoji universe. ”
