Erroneous Reports About Tom Petty’s Death Cause Confusion

Los Angeles (AP) — For several hrs Monday, music lovers believed Ben Petty was dead.

Courtney Love, Talib Kweli, Kid Rock, Cyndi Lauper, Paul Stanley and Lin-Manuel Miranda were among scores of fans publishing remembrances on Twitter, where Small was the top worldwide trending subject Monday afternoon. A memorial has been scheduled for his star at the Hollywood Walk of Fame.

But the 66-year-old entertainer is still alive, and information outlets that announced his dying Monday retracted their stories afterwards Monday. The Walk of Popularity tribute was canceled.

The confusion began with CBS News and the La Police Department. CBS published Petty' s obituary after tweeting how the LAPD had confirmed his loss of life. The trade paper Variety adopted, citing an unnamed source credit reporting the rocker' s death.

Then the LAPD issued a statement saying they have no information on Petty' s problem and that " initial information had been inadvertently provided to some media resources. "

" We apologize for any hassle in this reporting, " the division said.

CBS and Variety amended their particular stories. CBS News also launched a statement maintaining that it " reported information obtained officially from your LAPD about Tom Petty. "

" The LAPD later said it had been not in a position to confirm information about the particular singer, " the statement stated.

Each CBS and Variety now report TMZ reporting that says Small is " clinging to life" after suffering cardiac arrest.

An LAPD spokesman said in an interview Mon that its spokespeople did not react to any incident involving Petty. Official Tony Im said he could not really rule out that someone in the division spoke to reporters, but mentioned the LAPD has no investigative function in the matter.

Coroner' s officials mentioned Monday they have not received a written report of Petty' s death. Fireplace officials have said they taken care of immediately an emergency call for a man experiencing heart arrest on the block where Petty comes from Malibu on Sunday night, yet could not confirm it was the rocker who was taken to a local hospital.

Petty' ersus manager did not respond to emails plus phone calls seeking comment Monday.
