Florida Democrat removed from office, faces corruption charges following FBI sting

A Florida mayor had been removed from office Friday after the girl arrest on three felony fees.

Joy Cooper, 57, mayor associated with Hallandale Beach, allegedly solicited unlawful campaign contributions for herself plus two political allies,   the particular Sunlight Sentinel reported, citing court documents.  

Gov. Rick Scott  released the executive order suspending Cooper from office in the city simply north of Miami. The gran was accused of accepting advertising campaign contributions through former attorney Joe Koslow.

Following an undercover FBI analysis, Cooper, who surrendered Thursday, continues to be charged with money laundering, standard misconduct and exceeding campaign share limits, the report said.

Court documents stated undercover real estate agents gave Koslow $8, 000 within cash in Aug. 2012. Cooper seemed to be accused of soliciting funds just for Anthony Sanders, the former commissioner associated with Hallandale Beach. He resigned through his position in Aug. 2017 following allegations of misconduct, the particular Sunlight Sentinel reported.

The girl also has been charged with taking contributions in a government building, the first-degree misdemeanor with a one-year optimum sentence.

The felonies carry maximum jail sentences of five years.

Larry Davis, her attorney, said she programs to plead not guilty.

Cooper, a Liberal, has been the city’ s gran since 2005 and previously offered on the city commission beginning in 99.

“ I can assure you that I will certainly vigorously fight these allegations within court, ” Cooper said within a prepared statement obtained by the Sunlight Sentinel.

The news outlet reported Cooper purged her office before turning himself into Main Jail in Fortification Lauderdale Thursday. She was afterwards released from the jail Thursday evening.

Eric Fordin, a developer, told the Sun Sentinel he was “ shocked” by allegations against Cooper.

“ (She) has always been so aboveboard. I remember her writing a check for $2. 45 for a soda at the great opening of one of our hotels mainly because she could not accept a drink, ” Fordin said.

Fordin said he or she was never asked or forced by the mayor or other Hallandale Beach politicians for contributions.

Vice Gran Keith London will take over Cooper’ s duties while she is hanging.
