A network of Chicago rental schools has policies so rigorous that some menstruating girls are usually bleeding through their pants meant for lack of permitted bathroom breaks, an NPR affiliate reported upon Monday.
In early April, NPR The state of illinois outlined the “ dehumanizing” disciplinary methods at the Noble Network of Rental Schools . Teachers and learners subsequently reported other practices, which includes strictly limited bathroom visits.
“ We have [bathroom] escorts, and they rarely come so we find yourself walking out [of class] and that gets us in trouble, ” an anonymous student texted to an NPR reporter. “ Yet who wants to walk around knowing there’ t blood on them? It can still spot the seats. They just need to become more understanding. ”
Instead of change the policy, Noble Network associated with Charter Schools has carved away an exemption in the dress program code so menstruating students can tie up their school sweatshirts around their own waists, NPR reported. An email in order to staff members names the girls who are exempt from the dress code so they don’ t garner demerits.
Students get automatic detention after four demerits in a two-week period and have to pay for $140 for a “ character development” course after 13 such detentions, according to NPR’ s first statement.
One teacher told NPR the fact that school is disconnected from its mainly black student body, and college students sometimes resist the stringent insurance policies.
“ One pupil says it best, ‘ Once you treat us like animals, so what do you think we are gonna act like? ’ ” the teacher told NPR anonymously, for fear of retaliation.
Constance Jones Brewer, president from the Noble Network of Charter Educational institutions, delivered an email to staff after the initial NPR report, characterizing parts of the story as “ overstated or plainly false. ”
“ I’ ve seen exactly how our leaders and staff carry on and break new ground, push every other’ s thinking, and enhance the Noble experience every year, ” Brewer mentioned in the email . “ Therefore , while I acknowledge our defects, I also celebrate our willingness plus flexibility to hold each other accountable and obtain better. And I just don’ big t see the Noble that I know plus love reflected in this article. ”
The Noble Network of Rental Schools did not immediately respond to HuffPost’ s request for comment.
