A gunman suspected of capturing and killing a University associated with Utah student Monday night has been caught at a Salt Lake Town library Tuesday after a manhunt that will stretched on for about 15 hrs, police confirmed.
Austin Boutain, 24, allegedly shot and murdered ChenWei Guo, an international student on the university, during an attempted carjacking at the mouth of Red Butte Canyon, officials said. They additional that Boutain and his wife, Kathleen, were also wanted in Fantastic, Colo. for an unrelated homicide that will unfolded last week.
Kathleen Boutain was booked straight into Salt Lake County Jail to get unrelated drug and theft fees. She was treated for not known injuries after Monday night’ h incident.
Boutain was arrested after this individual was spotted by a librarian in a downtown Salt Lake City collection, about 4 miles away from the particular university shooting scene.
Police had obtained a call just after 8 g. m. Monday from Boutain’ t wife saying her husband attacked her while they were camping within Red Butte Canyon, prompting a good hours-long lockdown on the University associated with Utah’ s campus. Pershing defined the shooting as a “ mindless and random act of assault. ” The school’ s leader said students described Guo because “ outgoing charming, creative plus smart” and very engaged in the college.
Pershing added the college was working to bring Guo’ ersus family to Utah.
University officials released an alert on campus around nine p. m. saying: “ Pictures fired. Red Butte Canyon. Protection in Place. ” The lockdown has been lifted six hours later, yet classes were canceled on Halloween night.
