Military plane crashes near Georgia airport, FAA says

A WC-130 Hercules military cargo plane damaged and burst into flames Wed shortly after takeoff at a Georgia airport terminal, killing all five people on-board, the Georgia Air National Safeguard said.

The Puerto Rico Atmosphere National Guard plane crashed right before 11: 30 a. m., soon after takeoff from  Savannah/Hilton Head Airport terminal, the Savannah Air National Safeguard said. The plane was bound designed for Davis-Monthan Air Force Base within Arizona and on a training mission in order to went down.

“ There has been a plane crash on the intersection of Hwy 21 in Crossgate Rd. Roads will be power down. Please avoid the area, ” Chatham EMA tweeted shortly after the occurrence.  

Photos from the ground showed an area of the plane engulfed by open fire and thick black smoke billowing to the sky. Only the tail part of the aircraft was intact.  

Tag Jones told Savannah Morning News he was near the freeway when he noticed a aircraft flying dangerously low.

“ I could see [the plane] above the tree line and it also looked kind of low like it had been curving in toward street, yet I see them all the time, so I didn’ t think anything of it, ” Jones said. “ I appeared down and then looked back up also it didn’ t look like it nosedived, but it almost looked like it stalled and just went almost flat immediately in the middle of the highway. ”

Jones mentioned he saw an explosion plus believes the plane could have landed upon cars driving on the road.  

“ There was definitely cars going both methods, ” he said “… A lot of people stopped and got out of their own cars. ”

But Gina Bilbo, spokesperson for the Effingham County Sheriff’s Workplace, said at a news conference Wed afternoon that “as far as you may know there were no cars hit in this particular crash. ” She added, “it is an absolute miracle. ”

Firefighters publish the blaze but were nevertheless using a mixture of water and polyurethane foam to take care of any remaining hot spots.

It’ t unclear exactly what caused the accident. The Savannah Air National Safeguard said a board of officials will investigate the incident.

Puerto Vasto Gov. Ricardo Rossello tweeted that his thoughts are along with those impacted by the crash, which they’ll receive support from the Puerto Rico National Guard.

Savannah/Hilton Head International Airport said flights were being influenced by the plane crash and urged tourists to check with airlines regarding their particular flights. Meanwhile, Highway 21 will stay closed “indefinitely, ” according to authorities.

The WC-130 is a weather reconnaissance plane used by the Air Force and Air flow National Guard. The planes normally have a crew of five individuals, according to the U. S. Air Push fact sheet.  

The FAA at first identified the plane as a C-130 Hercules.
