NBC News fired “ Today” co-anchor Matt Lauer for improper sexual behavior hours before Range published the results of a two-month investigation tying the morning show superstar to various levels of alleged sexual nuisance.
Once Variety’ s bombshell hit the internet , the salacious details integrated one detail that caught open fire on social media: According to Variety, Lauer’ s private office at varied 30 Rockefeller Plaza contained the secret button that could essentially change that office into a secret intercourse lair.
“ His office was in the secluded space, and he had a key under his desk that permitted him to lock his doorway from the inside without getting up. This provided him the assurance of personal privacy, ” Variety’ s Ramin Setoodeh wrote.
An NBC insider confirmed the presence of the button to Fox Information.
The particular NBC insider added that Lauer’ s secret button wasn’ to the only one at NBC’ s thirty Rockefeller Plaza headquarters. A similar key exists — or at least recently been around — in the office of the “ Today” show’ s executive producer. The particular button, located under the executive producer’ s desk, would cause the doorway to the cavernous office to golf swing shut and click closed. The mechanism was actually the “ door opener”, a remote managed device that would automatically open or even close a door (and therefore lock if the door knob has been “ locked” ). Such systems currently retail for about $250 in order to $575 and the key fob or even remote control retails for another $30.
This particular mechanism was not viewed by NBC staff as a tool for improper behavior, the insider said. “ It was more of a gimmick, an ego thing so the EP didn’ t have to get out of their desk to close his doorway for a private conversation. ”
Pertaining to Lauer, however , his button permitted him immediate privacy. Lauer’ ersus modest 30 Rockefeller Plaza workplace had no windows looking on to the inside of the building — the only windows looked outside, on to Rockefeller Plaza.
The office, minimally furnished in grey, and with monochrome photos on the walls, was completely outclassed by a long couch.
Citing “ two women who were sexually stressed by Lauer, ” Variety had written that the secret button “ permitted him to welcome female workers and initiate inappropriate contact whilst knowing nobody could walk within on him. ”
The New York Periods reported late Wed that one of the women who lately came forward with accusations towards Lauer said the two had intercourse in his office in 2001 right after Lauer “ summoned her” towards the office. “ She told the days that she felt helpless since she didn’ t want to get rid of her job, and that she didn’ t report the encounter during the time because she felt ashamed. ”
The “ Today” offices have undergone renovations given that 2001 and it’ s improbable the secret button was installed within Lauer’ s office at that time.
NBC News did not respond to requests to get comment about the alleged secret key.
Lauer’ s button quickly grew to become a hot topic on social media marketing and people seemed both confused plus shocked by the revelation. “ That’s super-villain-level creepy, ” Free of charge Beacon writer Stephen Gutowski messaged, while LGBTQ rights advocate Amy Siskind wondered, “ Why would certainly NBC agree to put this key under his desk? ”
