Beatles drummer Ringo Starr has been knighted for their services to music.

The Duke of Cambridge presented the honour on the Liverpool-born superstar at a ceremony at Buckingham Structure.

“It means a great deal actually, ” the musician informed the BBC. “It means reputation for the things we’ve done. I had been really pleased to accept this. inch

The honour arrives 53 years after the Beatles had been all awarded the MBE : and Starr said he had skipped his bandmates’ companionship this time circular.

Once the Beatles received their MBEs within October 1965, the occasion had not been without controversy.

Rock and roll was still viewed along with suspicion by the establishment and several earlier honourees returned their medals within disgust.

Steve Lennon later claimed that the Beatles were so nervous at the concept of meeting the Queen they sneaked into a bathroom at Buckingham Structure for a cigarette.

“Who said that? ” laughed the particular drummer after Tuesday’s ceremony. “I’m not keeping that rumour heading. ”

He arrived at the investiture together with his wife, Barbara Bach, offering their trademark peace sign for fans plus photographers.

Asked whether or not he wanted to be known as Friend Ringo, the musician, whose genuine name is Richard Starkey, responded: “I don’t know yet. It’s brand new and I don’t know how you use it correctly. ”

Looking at BBC reporter Colin Paterson, he or she added: “But I expect you to utilize it. ”

The particular 77-year-old added he knew precisely what he’d do with his medal.

“I’ll be wearing this at breakfast, ” he joked.

Morpurgo honored

His honour arrives 21 years after fellow Beatle Paul McCartney was knighted.

Starr said the set had met for dinner last week within Los Angeles, and Sir Paul got offered him some advice for your ceremony: “Keep smiling. ”

Other people receiving honours on Tuesday’s ceremony included authors Jilly Cooper and Michael Morpurgo, previous Scottish rugby player John “Ian” McLauchlan, Welsh rugby player Mike Warburton and foster carer Anne Shaw.
