“Lion mark” ovum have been declared safe for women that are pregnant and young children, nearly 30 years following a salmonella scare.
Susceptible groups had been advised not to consume raw, soft boiled or runny eggs.
The Food Specifications Agency says “Lion Mark” ovum, which include almost all of the eggs produced in the united kingdom, are virtually free of salmonella.
The new advice uses a vaccination programme, and enhancements to animal welfare.
In 1988, a scare on the presence of salmonella in ovum caused a dramatic collapse within sales of eggs and a number of warnings for vulnerable groups to prevent eating them if they were natural or runny.
The then junior Conservative wellness minister, Edwina Currie, declared: “Most of the egg production in this nation, sadly, is now affected with salmonella. ”
Salmonella bacterias can cause food poisoning.
Mrs Currie’s statement wildly over-stated the danger and eventually led to her resignation.
But there was an issue with salmonella in eggs through the 1990s producers started the vaccination programme.
The particular “British Lion Mark”, printed upon eggs in red ink, had been introduced so that eggs could be followed back to the farm of source and to show best-before dates.
Almost 30 years upon from the initial scare, the Food Specifications Agency’s Heather Hancock, says runny eggs can now be eaten by everybody.
“We are now stating if there is a British Lion egg cell, you’re safe to do that.
“The risk of salmonella has become so low you needn’t get worried.
“And that’s genuine whether you’re a fit healthful adult, or whether you’re expecting or elderly or young.
“It’s only people upon strictly medically supervised diets who require to avoid those eggs. ”
Growing appetite with regard to eggs

Egg character David Brass says the introduction of the particular British Lion standard has made all of the difference.
“We understand from back in the ’80s when all of the scare started, there was an issue along with eggs.
“But the actual Lion standard does, it is a completely independent, audited code of exercise to make sure we have standards on the plantation that make sure we can’t possess any of those disease problems once again.
“And they have shown time after time, in those intervening years, that it is just a brilliant meals safety code. ”
Over the summer, millions of eggs had been pulled from supermarket shelves much more than a dozen European countries – such as the UK – after it was found out some had been contaminated with a possibly harmful insecticide at Dutch facilities.
British ovum were not affected.
