Seattle Bans Gay Conversion Therapy

The Seattle City Council with one voice voted Monday in order to ban transformation therapy for andersrum (umgangssprachlich) youth, becoming the third American town to independently outlaw the exercise.

Under the new ordinance, mental wellness providers will be barred from providing or advertising conversion therapy in order to minors. The practice,   which usually claims to assist gay people overcome same-sex appeal,   has been widely discredited by mental health professionals and known as potentially dangerous by the World Psychiatric Association.

Councilmember Lorena Gonzalez introduced  the bill   in July, calling transformation therapy a “ harmful exercise that needs to end. ”

“ Becoming gay, lesbian, bisexual, queer or even transgender is not an illness, nor could it be something that needs a cure, ” the lady said at the time.

Anyone found to become practicing such therapy on individuals younger than 18 will now become subject to a civil violation holding penalties of $500 for a initial offense and $1, 000 designed for subsequent ones. The city will also spend around fifty dollars, 000 advertising mainly to LGBT youth to raise understanding that the therapy is now banned, based on KUOW.

Five states and the Area of Columbia have banned transformation therapy in recent years, as have Ohio and Cincinnati. President Barack Obama also called to have an end to the practice last year at the state level,   although no plans were introduced for any federal legislation.  

Seattle City Councilmember Debora Juarez, a part of the Blackfeet Nation, gave an  emotional testimony on the ordinance’ s passage , The Stranger reports. She in comparison the therapy to the plight faced simply by Native Americans in the early days of the nation.

“ Conversion therapy is the twentieth century or 21st century version associated with what happened to my people all within the name in assimilation, ” the lady said. “ We were forcibly obtained from our families, from our children. We are literally one generation removed from that will practice. ”

“ It breaks or cracks my heart that we have to pass the law to recognize your humanity, ” she added.
