Sheriff’s deputy fatally shot by fleeing suspect in Indiana, police say

The Boone County Sheriff’ s mouthpiece in Indiana was fatally chance Friday morning after attempting to apprehend a fleeing suspect, police stated.

Jacob Pickett was critically injured while assisting in the chase plus later passed away, Indiana State Law enforcement confirmed in a  statement .

Pickett is the 1st person killed in the line of responsibility from the Boone County Sheriff’s Workplace since 1935, police said.

Officers with the Lebanon Police Division were at the scene to provide a woman an outstanding warrant around nine: 30 a. m. Friday. Then they spotted a man, who they named John D. Baldwin Jr., twenty-eight, who also had an outstanding justify for violation of probation intended for possession of a syringe, a  statement from Indiana State Police stated.

Law enforcement said Baldwin Jr. was purchased to stop, but instead he fled the particular scene in a silver Ford Focus along with two other people, later identified as Bob Baldwin Sr., 55, and Anthony Baumgardt, 21.

A chase for the males through Lebanon ensued and officials were joined by the Boone Region sheriff’s deputy, police said. The vehicle stopped and two of its residents got out and fled, Superintendent Doug Carter of the Indiana Condition Police said during a news meeting.

“While chasing one of the suspects the Boone County Deputy was shot, inch according to police.

Baumgardt is the suspected player with the dice, Carter said, adding that Pickett was shot in the head right after getting out of his car.

The shooting believe was injured by officers, law enforcement said in the statement, but he could be not experiencing life threatening accidents, Carter said. He will be incarcerated when he is able to leave the hospital.

Baldwin Sr. fled the area on foot and has been later located by authorities, police mentioned . Baldwin Jr. took off in the scene in the vehicle again plus was later caught by officials during a second chase.

Pickett is certainly from Brownsburg, Indiana and has proved helpful for the Boone County Sheriff’s Workplace since July 2015, police stated. He was the head K9 handler for the department and worked with their canine partner, Brick, for more compared to two years.

Speaking throughout the news conference, Sheriff Mike Nielsen described Pickett as a “good man” and a “warrior. ”

“There are simply no words that can explain the suffering that we feel today, ” Nielsen said.

Pickett leaves behind a wife plus two young boys, the sheriff said.

Before joining the Boone Region Sheriff’s Office, Pickett was a mouthpiece with the Tipton County Sheriff’s Division and a jailer at the Marion Region Jail

Pickett is an organ donor, law enforcement said, and he and his family can “continue to selflessly” serve even with his death.
