Snow and ice sweep across parts of UK

Snow and ice has held parts of the UK as a cold take dubbed the “mini beast through the east” sweeps in.

Parts of eastern England and Scotland have already seen snow, with more anticipated in the Midlands and Wales.

More than 100 flights from Heathrow Airport have been cancelled plus drivers are warned to take treatment.

Amber warnings of the possible risk to life affect north-west England, Yorkshire, the Midlands, Greater london and south-east England from the mid-day.

Met Office yellow-colored “be aware” warnings are also in position across much of the UK until Weekend.

The heaviest snowfall showers have affected north-east Britain into the North Midlands, as well as areas of southern England – including Hampshire, Sussex and Kent.

Temperature ranges dipped to a low of -3. 2C in Loftus, North Yorkshire, during the afternoon.

Yet strong winds made temperatures really feel as cold as -7C or even -8C for some.

Gusts of up to 70mph are expected in north England and parts of Wales, forecasters say.

The Fulfilled Office said: “Travel delays upon roads are likely, stranding some automobiles and passengers. And some delays plus cancellations to rail and flights are likely. ”

The particular cancellations at Heathrow have mainly affected short-haul routes, although PURSE services to New York and Chi town have been disrupted.

The BA spokesman said: “During winter conditions aircraft have to be de-iced just before departure to ensure that they are safe, and extra measures are being taken to ensure the particular safety of our operation is taken care of at all times. ”

Other cancelled flights from Heathrow airport include services from Lufthansa, Aer Lingus, TAP Air Portugal plus KLM.

National Rail has recommended passengers to check for service disruptions before travelling.

Great Western Railway providers between Newbury in Berkshire plus Bedwyn, Wiltshire and between Westbury and Chippenham are disrupted.

Great Northern stated up to 8cm of snow can fall on its network in the evening and warned services might be cancelled at short notice.

Meanwhile, motorists have been recommended to avoid trans-Pennine roads where probable.

Temperatures are expected to become back around average from Wednesday, as conditions return to more standard levels for mid-March.
