‘The Love Boat’ cast reunites on ‘Today’ more than 40 years after show first aired

All aboard! The particular cast of “The Love Boat” is back on deck.  

Upon Friday morning, the original cast from the beloved 1970s TV series “The Appreciate Boat” reunited for one more vacation cruise on the “Today” show.  

More than 4 decades after the show premiered, the well-known cast  ‒ including Gavin MacLeod, Ted Lange, Bernie Kopell, Lauren Tewes, Jill Whelan and Sally Grandy ‒ appeared on the early morning show live from Los Angeles, exactly where on May 10 they obtained an honorary star on the Showmanship Walk of Fame in partnership with Little princess Cruises.    

For their reunion, MacLeod, known for his iconic role associated with Capt. Merrill Stubing, donned their signature captain hat while Lange zeit, who played the ship’s enthusiastic bartender Isaac Washington, sported their signature red jacket and mustache. Koppell, who played the ship’s doctor, Adam Bricker, wore their signature specs.

Also in attendance was the ship’s cruise director, Julie McCoy, performed by Tewes, the captain’s perfect little angels daughter; Vicki, who was played simply by Whelan; and Grandy, who performed Yeoman Burl Smith but was reputed for his character nickname, “Gopher. inch

Just before reuniting on “Today, ” the particular cast sat down with early morning hosts Hoda Kotb and Savannah Guthrie to talk about the significance of the traditional TV show in May of last year .

When requested how often the cast gets jointly, Whelan said, “We were together last night at my apartment. ” 

But the fun-loving cast, who went on to strapping eight seasons of the hit collection, admitted that they didn’t know that the particular show was going to be a success in order to first aired in 1977, made by Aaron Spelling.  

“We got the particular worst reviews, ” Koppell stated.

According to MacLeod, he knew straight away “The Love Boat” was traditional material. “We had a reading at the office, just the guys. And we finished the particular reading… and I’m walking lower and a guy says, ‘Well, I really hope this goes well, ” and am said, ‘I’m telling you we’re going to go at least seven years. ‘”

Grandy said the show turned out to be this kind of success partly because there was nothing can beat it on the air.

“It was love, at the time there were only cop displays and sitcoms on the air, inch he said. “So, this display filled some kind of need that just Aaron Spelling understood. ”
