82 Rabbis, Activists Arrested On Capitol Hill Over DACA Protest

More than 80 Jewish clergy people and activists were arrested upon Capitol Hill on Wednesday to get protesting President Donald Trump ’ s plan to end a program that will protects hundreds of thousands of undocumented migrants who came to the United States as kids.

More than a hundred rabbis and active supporters and workers, some wearing prayer shawls plus yarmulkes, gathered in the center of the rotunda in the Russell Senate Office Building upon Wednesday morning. They sang tracks, shouted cheers and made claims of support for the young unrecorded immigrants, known as Dreamers, a group of who were watching the action from the balcony one floor up.

Law enforcement arrested 82 protesters, U. S i9000. Capitol Police communications director Avoi Malecki told HuffPost. The protesters were charged for “ crowding, obstructing, or incommoding” in a community building.  

Activists from Judaism groups, including the Religious Action Middle of Reform Judaism, Bend the particular Arc Jewish Action and the Anti-Defamation League,   were there to need immediate passage of the Dream Respond,   legislation that could protect almost 800, 000 Dreamers from impending deportation and provide them with a path to citizenship.

“ It speaks to who we are being a Jewish community, and specifically being an American Jewish community, ” Barbara Weinstein, associate director of the Spiritual Action Center, told HuffPost. “ We as Jews know the connection with being immigrants. And as Americans, we’ re deeply aware of our background as a nation of immigrants, which throughout that history immigrants were a source of strength for this nation. ”

Weinstein, who was at Wednesday’ s action, said the relaxing protest was intended to bring consciousness to the Dreamers’ plight and desire Congress to act on legislation that will protect them from deportation.

“ This is an issue that has bipartisan assistance ― Republicans and Democrats understand this is the right thing to do, ” the lady said. “ Now it’ t Congress’ s responsibility to pass the clean Dream Act. ”

The particular Dream Act, a longstanding want of immigration reformers, has discovered renewed support since the Trump management announced in September it would end the Deferred Action for The child years Arrivals program. DACA has protected hundreds of thousands of Dreamers from expulsion.

Rabbi Jonah Dov Pesner, director of the Spiritual Action Center of Reform Judaism, was among the clergy members caught Wednesday.

“ This is no time meant for business as usual, ” Pesner stated in a statement ahead of the protest. “ In the Torah, we are called thirty six different ways to love the stranger, the particular orphan, and the widow. We were other people in the land of Egypt, plus know what it means to be turned far from places we thought of as home. ”

The rabbi added: “ Nowadays, we say there is no more time in order to waste. We insist that Dreamers be recognized as the Americans they are. ”
