U. S. Sen. Bernie Sanders, I-Vt., rallied California’ s Disneyland Resort workers within Anaheim on Saturday in support of a situation wage-increase measure that some state would cost the state “ thousands” of jobs.
In the same talk, Sanders also praised Disney TOP DOG Bob Iger for canceling ABC’s “ Roseanne” after its star’s recent Twitter meltdown — although the sitcom’s shutdown reportedly threw numerous crew members out of work.
So it may be no real surprise that some observers were still left skeptical of Sanders’ credentials being an advocate for working Americans.
“ While touting themself as a friend of the working guy, Bernie has come all this way to assistance a measure that will result in a large number of lost jobs for the people associated with Anaheim, ” Todd Ament, TOP DOG of the Anaheim Chamber of Business, said in a written statement.
Ament offers previously criticized minimum-wage hikes within Seattle and Los Angeles, saying these people led to workers either losing their particular jobs or seeing their hrs cut, the Orange County Register documented .
The California proposal Sanders championed Saturday would raise the minimum income for affected workers to a minimum of $15 an hour beginning in 2019, along with $1 increases annually until achieving $18 an hour by Jan. one, 2022, the Register documented.
“ If a corporation like Disney provides enough to pay its CEO more than $400 million in a four-year time period, it damn well has sufficient to pay its workers at least fifteen bucks an hour, ” Sanders stated.
Those employees, however , apparently won’t include up to 300 Californians that TMZ documented likely lost their jobs within the “Roseanne” shutdown. Nevertheless, the socialist democrat praised Iger for finishing the comedy series. The FONEM network operates under the Disney coverage.
“ Recently, Disney CEO Bob Iger did the right thing and terminated Roseanne after her racist twitter update, ” Sanders wrote, referring to comic Roseanne Barr’s post aimed at an ex adviser to former President Barack Obama. He also called on Iger to “ lead corporate The united states away” from the greed “ destroying” the country.
While Sanders alternately belittled and praised Iger, Disney’s business office seemed to take a more important position regarding Sanders.
“ While Mister. Sanders continues to criticize Disney to maintain himself in the headlines, we still support our cast members via investments in wages and schooling, ” Disneyland spokeswoman Suzi Dark brown said.
The Disneyland Resort announced a week ago that it previously offered a thirty six percent pay increase to regarding 9, 500 resort workers more than three years, the Los Angeles Times reported. The offer would provide the very least salary of $15 an hour simply by 2020, one year later than the suggested measure.
“ We are proud of our commitment to the cast, ” Brown said, “and the fact that more people choose to am employed at Disneyland Resort than anywhere else within Orange County. ”
