China’s Xi promises to cut auto import tariff, warns against Cold War mentality

China’s Leader Xi Jinping appeared to strike the conciliatory tone during a speech Wednesday where he promised to cut China’s car import tariffs and ease limitations on foreign ownership in its car industry as tensions play away with Washington over tariffs.

Xi made no direct mention of the challenge with President Donald Trump yet pledged to open China’s markets more and improve conditions for international companies. He warned against using a “Cold War” mentality, which he or she called outdated, according to Bloomberg.  

“ We are going to take the initiative to expand imports, ” Xi said during his keynote speech at the opening of the Boao Forum for Asia, China In addition News reported. “China will not seek trade surplus; we have an authentic desire to increase imports and obtain greater balance of international obligations under the current account, ” he stated.

Xi said Beijing will “significantly lower” tariffs on auto imports this season and ease restrictions on international ownership in the auto industry as quickly as possible.

The far east charges total duties of 25 % on most imported cars — a ten percent customs tariff plus a fifteen percent auto tax. Since Dec 2016, Beijing also has charged an extra 10 percent on “super-luxury” vehicles costed above $200, 000.

The U. H. bought more than $500 billion within goods from China last year and today is planning or considering fees and penalties on some $150 billion of these imports.

China has pledged to “counterattack with great strength” if Trump decides to follow by means of on his latest threat to inflict tariffs on an additional $100 billion dollars in Chinese goods — right after an earlier announcement that targeted fifty dollars billion.

Xi tried to place China as a defender of free industry and cooperation in response to Trump’s “America first” calls for import restrictions plus an overhaul of trade offers to make them more favorable towards the United States.

“China’s door of opening up will never be closed and will only open broader, ” said Xi at the community forum on the southern island of Hainan.
