Cleveland Browns fans have not celebrated an NATIONAL FOOTBALL LEAGUE championship since 1964. On Sunday, six days after their group concluded the second 0-16 season within pro football history, thousands of all of them held a mock parade in order to mark a new low for a business that has had plenty of them.
In a gathering that was half-protest, half-party, followers lined the streets around FirstEnergy Stadium and cheered as eighty vehicles, a rock band on a flatbed truck and a group carrying twenty-eight tombstones to represent the team’s 28 starting quarterbacks since the group resumed play in 1999, took the “no victory” lap.
“We don’t are worthy of this. We deserve better individuals in the front office. We are worthy of better people coaching and we should have better players, ” Patty Szylakowski, who grew up in a football-loving home with five brothers, told the particular Associated Press. “We’re buying Browns gear every year. We support all of them every year no matter what… Every fan out of all NFL cities should be thinking about this particular. If they got crap like we all did, they would be doing the same. ”
Most of the anger was aimed at proprietors Jimmy and Dee Haslam, whom purchased the Browns in 2012, yet have been unable to produce the champion they’ve promised.
One fan held a sign that will read: “Jimmy and Dee Move Jump in the Lake. ” One more carried by a fan dressed like a bishop said: “Deliver us through Jimmy and Dee. ”
The genesis of Saturday’s event came throughout the 2016 season, when the Browns completed 1-15. With the NBA’s Cavaliers successful their first championship and MLB’s Indians reaching the World Series within the same year, McNeil sarcastically messaged: “This Browns team deserves the parade. ”
Unexpectedly, many of McNeil’s other disgruntled fans jumped on board using the idea and began raising cash. McNeil canceled that year’s prepared parade after the Browns won their own only game of the season upon Christmas Eve and donated the particular proceeds to the Cleveland Food Financial institution.
This particular fall, as the Browns lost plus lost again, McNeil’s accidental concept was resurrected. This time, the group didn’t spoil the party plus capped off their winless period with a 28-24 New Year’s Event loss to the Pittsburgh Steelers — who played backups at a number of key positions.
Not every Browns lover was fond of the imperfect period parade idea. John Rivera ended up to protest, not participate.
“I believe it’ s very embarrassing regarding Cleveland to go 0-16 and I think this particular parade is embarrassing, ” he or she told Fox 8.
“I don’t think anyone’s looking at this thing and heading, ‘look at these idiot Clevelanders who are celebrating 0-16, ‘” this individual told the AP. “I don’t believe that’s the message. This is a clear information to those people (the Haslams) in the building. That’s who we were searching for. ”
Cleveland police conservatively estimated the particular crowd at 3, 200, plus reported no major incidents or even arrests. McNeil said nearly $15, 000 raised for the event will be donated to the Cleveland Food Financial institution.
