Crash of hockey team’s bus leaves at least 15 dead, town devastated

A western Canadian city of about 6, 000 people had been left devastated after learning that the bus carrying the town’s younger hockey team had collided using a semi-truck while traveling to a playoff online game, resulting in at least 15 deaths.

A minimum of 14 others on the bus had been injured in the Friday crash, law enforcement confirmed.

Most of those killed had been likely the players on the Humboldt Broncos hockey team, who were between sixteen and 20 years old — although the Royal Canadian Mounted Police [RCMP] would not specify the number of of the fatalities were players.

CBC News reported the team’ s mind coach, Darcy Haugan, was among the people killed in the incident. Haugan’ s wife, Christina, confirmed their death to reporters.

“My brother didn’t make it… ” Haugan’s sister  messaged.

Police did not immediately release what they are called of the deceased and there was simply no mention of the truck driver.

President Trump messaged Saturday that he spoke to Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau plus sent his condolences to the sufferers of the crash.  

“Just spoke in order to Justin Trudeau to pay my top respect and condolences to the groups of the terrible Humboldt team disaster. May God be with them almost all! ” Trump tweeted.  

The team’s president said he was “shocked” and devastated by the crash.  

“We are just within utter disbelief and shock in the loss that’s fallen upon all of us, ” Kevin Garinger, president from the Humboldt Broncos team, told  CBC. He said he first discovered of the accident through a phone call from the fan.

“Our organization will never be the exact same, ” Garinger told the Saskatoon Celebrity Phoenix .

Police mentioned overnight that the bus had been having 29 occupants, including the driver.

Authorities stated the crash occurred on Road 35 in Tisdale, Saskatchewan, regarding 5 p. m. local period. The town is about 1, 300 kilometers from San Francisco.  

The Broncos had been on their way to Game 5 from the semi-finals against the Nipawin Hawks. Nipawin is about 164 miles from Saskatoon realtor. After receiving word of the accident, the Hawks announced on Fb that the game had been canceled.

Myles Shumlanski, father of Broncos player Chip Shumlanski, told the  Saskatoon Superstar Phoenix  he went to the picture after getting a call from their son.

“ It was a disaster, ” he mentioned. “ We had a crane raising the bus. ”

Derek Patter, one of the gamers who survived the crash, has been photographed holding hands with 2 other players in the hospital. Patter’ s father shared the image upon social media.

Tom Straschnitzki told CBC Information his son, Ryan, was hurt in the crash.

“He’s alive and inhaling and exhaling, and from what we know they have a broken back, and as associated with now, can’t feel anything through his waist down, ” Straschnitzki said.

Trudeau expressed his sympathy to the Humboldt community in a tweet, saying this individual was “unable to imagine” the actual team’s parents must be going through.

Humboldt Gran Rob Muench  told CBC this individual was devastated.

“It’s going to hit the city hard, ” he said. “ It’s not a good day for Humboldt. ”

Saskatchewan Premier Scott Moe messaged that there were no words to explain the loss.

“To the City of Humboldt, the whole Broncos organization, and the families influenced by this tragedy, please know you happen to be in Saskatchewan’s hearts, ” this individual wrote. “ Tonight we must hope for these families. ”

The Nipawin Apostolic Church was serving as collecting place for families to receive more details as it became available, the RCMP stated.

“ We just opened our constructing here with food and drinks … they can come if they need someplace to go or someone to talk to, ” Nipawin Apostolic Church Pastor Michael jordan Gadsby told the Star Phoenix arizona. “ There’ s not a lot of verified information at this point. Families are just waiting around to hear from their kids.

“ There’ h a lot of tears. ”

Penn Lee, the particular spokeswoman for the town of Humboldt, said grief counselors are available.

“Everybody is simply so devastated. These poor youthful boys, ” Lee said.

Much of the handbags world issued messages of condolences, including National Hockey League Office Gary Bettman.

“The NHL mourns the particular passing of those who perished while offering strength and comfort to those wounded while traveling to play and be part of a casino game they all love, ” Bettman mentioned in a statement.
