Maine officer shot and killed by suspect who stole his car, robbed store

Government bodies in Maine launched a catch Wednesday after a man shot plus killed a sheriff’ s mouthpiece, stole his cruiser and then swindled a convenience store, officials stated.

Somerset County Sheriff Dale Lancaster said Corporal Eugene Cole has been killed around 1: 45 the. m. on U. S. Path 2 in Norridgewock, located regarding 30 miles north of the condition capital of Augusta. Cole has been one of two cops shot dead countrywide, with a Dallas police officer succumbing in order to his wounds Wednesday morning right after being injured the day before.

“He had been one of the finest deputies that you would like to meet, ” Lancaster said associated with Cole at a news conference.

Authorities mentioned the suspect, 29-year-old John Williams, stole Cole’s police cruiser following the shooting and drove it to some Cumberland Farms store, a 24-hour gas and convenience store, plus robbed it.   Lancaster failed to not disclose any details about so what happened before the deputy was shot, saying authorities would release further information by Wednesday afternoon.

After fleeing your local store, Williams abandoned the vehicle, which was discovered around 5 a. m., authorities said. It is not known if Williams is in another vehicle or by walking, but he should be considered “armed plus dangerous, ” according to Lancaster.

Williams is described as becoming 5-foot-6, 120 pounds and getting blue eyes and brown curly hair in a ponytail, Lancaster said.   Williams was previously arrested in Ma on March 22 on guns violations, according to a police survey.

The particular FBI  informed WGME   they are delivering assistance to help the Somerset Region Sheriff’s Office and Maine Condition Police with the investigation.

Cole was a person in the sheriff’s office for thirteen years and had a son, based on Lancaster.

Police and sheriff’s deputies might be seen holding weapons near the comfort store. Authorities are now conducting the manhunt in the area, including using helicopters to try to locate Williams.


Maine Gov. Paul LePage asked for residents within Somerset County and the surrounding region to “stay safe”

“Our deepest condolences go out to the family of fallen Mouthpiece Sheriff Corporal Eugene Cole, inch LePage wrote on Twitter. In case you live in Somerset County and the encircling area, please cooperate with police force and stay safe. ”

Senator Susan Collins said on Twitter she has been “deeply saddened” by the news.

“I feel deeply saddened to learn Cpl. Eugene Cole was killed in the type of duty in Norridgewock this morning, inch Collins said. “Cpl. Cole offered the citizens of Somerset Region for 13 years with dignity & distinction, & Maine is going to be eternally grateful for his courageous actions to protect his community. inch

The final time a Maine officer had been shot and killed in the type of duty was 29 years ago upon March 31, 1989, according to WGME. Maine State Police Detective Giles Landry was gunned down in the police cruiser outside a cellular home in Leeds while looking into a child abuse case.
