School Homework Asks Kids To Give 3 ‘Good’ Reasons For Slavery

A private Christian school in Wauwatosa, Wisconsin, is under fire right after asking fourth-graders to lay out 3 “ good” reasons for slavery included in a homework assignment.

On Mon, the students at Our Redeemer Lutheran School were handed the social studies worksheet that informed them to “ give 3 ‘ good’ reasons for slavery and several bad reasons. ”

Trameka Brown-Berry,   who has a 9-year-old child in the class, told Fox 6   that she was in “ shock” over the “ highly unpleasant and insensitive” assignment.

“ We couldn’ t believe they delivered something like that home, ” Brown-Berry said.   “ Not only has been my son in an awful placement, but the students who weren’ capital t black ― that’ s exactly what keeps racism going. ”

The girl posted a photo of the homework upon Facebook.

“ I feel there is no good reason with regard to slavery that’ s why I did so not write, ” her kid answered, as shown in the publish.

Principal Jim Van Dellen delivered a letter to parents by having an apology and said that the instructor didn’ t properly describe the job to students,   according to the station  WISN .

“ We understand that, since presented, the words used showed an absence of sensitivity and were offensive, ” Van Dellen wrote. “ The objective of the assignment was not, in any way, to get students argue that ANY slavery is definitely acceptable ― a concept that will go against our core values plus beliefs about the equality and really worth of people of all races. ”

The particular assignment was intended to spark controversy in the class, he told Sibel 6, adding that it has been taken from the curriculum.

Brown-Berry shared an up-date on Facebook saying that she met with the primary and that he agreed to mandate “ cultural diversity/cultural competency inservice [training for faculty] to prevent this through happening again. ”

Our Redeemer Lutheran School did not immediately react to a request for comment.
