Winter Storm Hitting East Coast Could Shatter All-Time Cold Temperature Records

A powerful winter storm continued having down on the eastern United States upon Wednesday evening, bringing frigid temps, snow and ice to parts of the country that seldom see such weather.

“ Sour cold and dangerous wind chills” as far south as the Sarasota panhandle and as far north because Maine are expected to persist in to the weekend, the National Weather Service said Wednesday evening. There exists a probability that the “ bomb cyclone ” brings at least four more inches associated with snow to parts of the region simply by Friday night, the agency cautioned.  

Cold temperatures earlier immediately have already left several people lifeless, with The Associated Press reporting  at least a dozen fatalities   and Reuters reporting  eight fatalities .

New York City Mayor Bill sobre Blasio announced on Wednesday night time that schools would be closed Thursday. But some National Weather Program outposts in southern states mentioned precipitation had subsided.  

“ The snow, sleet, and abnormally cold rain are over, but the following few days will stay very cold! ” the particular National Weather Service in Tallahassee, Florida, said Wednesday evening. It was the first time the city had seen measurable snowfall ,   though totals went from search for amounts to half an in . .  

The Weather Channel mentioned temperatures in the Florida capital were  lower than these in Anchorage, Alaska . Some of Interstate 10 in north Florida shut down due to the extreme problems, also causing both the Charleston Airport terminal and the Savannah/Hilton Head International Airport in order to close down.  

Parts of Niagara Falls had also  frozen over   by Wednesday.

“ Bomb cyclones” form when a weather system quickly drops in pressure and rapidly intensifies ― a process called bombogenesis , based on the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Organization.

“ Reinforcing shots of frosty air will continue across a lot of the Eastern half of the country by means of this week keeping afternoon highs just as much as 10 to 20 degrees beneath normal, ” the agency  said   Wednesday.

The Washington Post notes the particular storm will “ in many ways  resemble a wintertime hurricane ” and mentioned the event could be one of the region’ ersus most  intensive   in decades.  

Forecasters also warned Wednesday night time that 1 to 3 in . of snow could fall through the southern part of New England up to the Cape Cod Canal   through Thursday night evening. The worst blizzard problems are expected in eastern Massachusetts plus Rhode Island.

The entire state associated with Maine is susceptible to blizzard conditions , The Weather Channel noted, as are areas of southern New Hampshire and far eastern Long Island.

“ The cold weather that will result will be more frigid than anything that occupants of the Midwest and East Coastline have experienced so far during what continues to be an unusually intense and durable cold snap. Instead of breaking day-to-day temperature records, as dozens of metropolitan areas have been, all-time cold temperature records is going to be threatened on Friday, Saturday, plus Sunday. ”

The weather should warm up by earlier next week, but the ongoing frigid temperature ranges could make the start of 2018 one of the very coldest on record.
